Masetlha drags ANC boss to court

Former National Intelligence Agency boss Billy Masetlha has subpoenaed African National Congress (ANC) secretary general Kgalema Motlanthe to hand over the ruling party’s ”hoax” email report. The report, sealed and classified as confidential, will form part of Masetlha’s defence in his fraud trial in July.

Phosa critique blocked

A hard-hitting document by former Mpumalanga premier Matthews Phosa criticising the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) for being compromised by party politics was held back “for sterilisation” by the ANC’s top brass, an ANC leader has told the Mail & Guardian.

So long, World Cup

Australia trounced South Africa by seven wickets on Wednesday to move smoothly into the final of the Cricket World Cup, chasing down a paltry target of 150 with 18.3 overs to spare. Australia’s bowlers blew away South Africa, reducing them to 27-5 before the Proteas rallied to reach 149 all out, Justin Kemp top-scoring with 49 not out.

Revealing race: Is anyone interested?

Harsh emotion, raw trauma and intense politics erupted in the wake of the Media Monitoring Project’s (MMP) study of racism in the media in 1999. Last week, a <a class="standardtext" href="http://www.mediamonitoring.co.za" target="_blank">new report</a> by the MMP in association with the Human Rights Commission (HRC) barely made the news. The lack of attention is partly a sign that we have transcended the original problems.

Boxing SA to probe bribery claims

Bribery allegations made by Golden Gloves Promotions (GGP) against the official who officiated at the world title fight in Cape Town will be dealt with by Boxing SA (BSA) in a meeting on Thursday. This was disclosed by a BSA spokesperson Loyiso Mtya amid worsening ties between GGP boss Rodney Berman and his rival who promoted the fight.
