DA threatens to take Balfour to court

The Democratic Alliance on Sunday threatened to take Correctional Services Minister Ngconde Balfour to court to force him to release the parole conditions of former African National Congress chief whip Tony Yengeni. ”I will not address myself to one offender when I have so many offenders in the country,” Balfour apparently told the DA.

Angry Nucifora targets ref

Angry Auckland Blues coach David Nucifora has blasted referee Stuart Dickinson for the manner in which his side was dislodged from the top of the Super 14 table by the Coastal Sharks on Saturday. Nucifora risked censure after he had words with the Australian at halftime and then criticised the referee at a post-match press conference.

Massa wins Bahrain Grand Prix

Brazil’s Felipe Massa driving a Ferrari won the Bahrain Formula One Grand Prix on Sunday to record his third career victory. Englishman Lewis Hamilton was second in a McClaren — becoming the first driver to finish on the podium in his first three Grand Prix — and Kimi Raikkonen of Finland in another Ferrari was third.

Kelly swipes PGA lead from Els

Jerry Kelly aced the par-three fourth hole on his way to a four-under par 67 on Saturday to grab the lead at the United States PGA Verizon Heritage after a tough day for Ernie Els. Kelly, who trailed leader Els by three strokes when the day began, stood on 13-under par 200 after 54 holes.

Kallis blames conditions for SA loss

South African vice-captain Jacques Kallis blamed the unpredictable Caribbean weather for his team’s defeat by New Zealand in a World Cup Super Eights match on Saturday. New Zealand restricted South Africa to 193 for seven and replied with 196 with five wickets and 10 balls to spare.

Johannesburg streets were on Sunday lined with frenzied residents clamouring to see President Thabo Mbeki as he made his way through Hillbrow. Some cheered out of windows, others were perched on their balconies — waving and shouting to grab Mbeki’s attention — as he shook hands with ecstatic residents on the streets.

Liverpool distracted by dreams of Europe

Liverpool’s thoughts appeared to be on their eagerly-anticipated Champions’ League semifinal with Chelsea as they ground out a tedious goalless draw with Manchester City at Eastlands on Saturday. In front of the biggest crowd at this stadium this season, 45 883, City stretched their run of play without a goal to nine hours and 20 minutes at home.
