Zimbabwe tells Africa to unite against West

The Zimbabwean government has urged African nations to join hands to fight domination by powerful Western countries, state-media reported Thursday. ”The new global village … poses the danger of forcing the poor, newly independent and formerly exploited countries .. to play the game when the table is badly tilted against them,” Information Minister Sikhanyiso Ndlovu said.

ANC: We are still some way from our economic vision

South Africa still has to achieve a total economic transformation in the country, the ruling African National Congress (ANC) said on Thursday. This statement was contained in the party’s policy discussion documents released in Johannesburg. The aim is to stimulate debate in the party’s branches ahead of its national policy conference in June.

But although global TB rates are levelling off, the emergence of drug-resistant versions of the disease is complicating control efforts.

Militia clash with troops in DRC capital

Gunfire and explosions rocked the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Kinshasa, on Thursday as armed followers of a former rebel leader clashed with government troops, witnesses said. The shooting broke out after the personal militia of defeated presidential contender Jean-Pierre Bemba defied a government order last week to disband.

Fidentia boss back in court

Fidentia boss J Arthur Brown was back in court on Thursday morning as his battle to be released on bail continued. A Cape Town magistrate granted him R1-million bail on Monday, but ordered that any surety he offered had to be approved by the Scorpions.
