The Waratahs, who have excelled in recent years in the Super 12, now Super 14 competition, went on to beat the Lions 25-16 at Ellis Park on Friday night. The Waratahs’ Daniel Halangahu went over for a try in the 24th minute, which was converted by Peter Hewat, who also added a penalty.

Guinea refused entry to a delegation of mediators from West African regional body Ecowas on Friday, saying it had resolved the dispute which sparked a general strike last month. An Ecowas delegation had been scheduled to travel to the Guinean capital Conakry on Friday to encourage dialogue after an 18-day strike in which more than 90 people were killed.

The Bush administration played down the United States contribution to world climate change on Friday and called for a ”global discussion” after a United Nations report blamed humans for much of the warming over the past 50 years. ”We are a small contributor when you look at the rest of the world,” US Energy Secretary Sam Bodman said of greenhouse gas emissions.

Nearly 100 people died and 30 others were wounded this week in clashes in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) that erupted when demonstrators protesting alleged electoral fraud rampaged through several towns and security forces tried to restore order, rights groups and humanitarian organisations said.

Apple is urging some iPod and iTunes users to hold off on upgrading their computers to Windows Vista, warning that the iTunes software may not work well with the new operating system from Microsoft. Apple said iTunes may work with many Vista computers, but the company knows of some compatibility problems.

Chinese President Hu Jintao told Sudan’s leader he must give the United Nations a bigger role in trying to resolve the conflict in Darfur and also said China wanted to do more business with its key African ally. Hu urged President Omar al-Bashir in a face-to-face meeting on Friday to boost the UN’s ”constructive role in realising peace in Darfur”.

Gauteng provincial minister for community safety Firoz Cachalia has denied pledging to quit if crime levels did not decline in a provincial police operation, dubbed Iron Fist. Cachalia said on Friday he was asked by a journalist at a press conference at the launch of the operation if he would consider resigning should crime not decrease.
