Not for the first time, the violence of extremists has achieved the exact opposite of what they intended. Ogun Samast, alleged to have gunned down the bridge-building ethnic Armenian Turkish journalist Hrant Dink last week, reportedly told investigators he was defending Turkey’s national honour. Instead, Turkey’s honour stands besmirched before an appalled international audience.

Under severe international and domestic pressure, Swazi Prime Minister Themba Dlamini recentlymoved swiftly to crack down on rampant corruption in Swaziland. Police arrested eight people, including senior government officials in the ministry of finance and directors of private companies involved in the plundering of R50-million that the state had set aside for capacity building.

Newly elected Uefa chief Michel Platini confirmed on Sunday he intends to reduce the number of clubs that England, Spain and Italy are allowed to qualify for the Champions League. For five years the mystery surrounding Mullah Muhammad Omar, the Taliban supreme leader, has been impenetrable. Most of the very few available photographs of him are fuzzy and indistinct. He has been captured on videotape just once. A -million American bounty on his head has gone untouched.

Labour Minister Membathisi Mdladlana has invited the Society for the Prevention of cruelty to animals (SPCA) to attend a ceremony during which a bull will be slaughtered. ”I invite the SPCA to join us as we will be slaughtering a bull without euthanising it. We’ll ask them to come into the kraal to share in the feast.”

South African Retief Goosen won the ,2-million Qatar Masters with a one-stroke victory over Australian Nick O’Hern on Sunday. The South African, aiming for his first win in more than a year after a disappointing 2006, held his nerve on the final hole to curl in an eagle to finish the tournament on 15-under-par 273.

President Thabo Mbeki was on Sunday expected to attend an African Peer Review Forum during which South Africa’s country report will be presented, the Foreign Affairs Department said. The forum, in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, will also look at Ghana, Rwanda and Kenya, which had already been peer-reviewed, said spokesperson Ronnie Mamoepa.

Jacques Kallis and Ashwell Prince steered South Africa to a series-clinching five-wicket win over Pakistan on the third day of the third and final Test at Newlands on Sunday. Centuries by Ricky Ponting and Matthew Hayden helped Australia maintain their winning streak with an unexpectedly narrow eight-run victory over a plucky New Zealand in their triangular series one-day international in Perth on Sunday.
