Solskjaer fires United to the top

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s double strike sunk Newcastle and put Manchester United on top of the English Premiership on Sunday. Solskjaer scored just before and after half-time to claim his first league goals at Old Trafford for over three years and take Sir Alex Ferguson’s side above champions Chelsea on goal difference.

Woods thunders to eight-shot win

Tiger Woods carded a last-round 67 to win the World Golf Championship event at The Grove on Sunday by eight shots from England’s Ian Poulter and Adam Scott of Australia. Woods was 23-under for the tournament and did not need to extend himself after taking a six-shot lead into the final day.

Bush challenges ‘misimpressions’ about Iraq

United States President George Bush on Saturday challenged ”misimpressions” about the Iraq war as he battled a gloomy intelligence assessment of the conflict and the fallout of a book portraying him as in denial over it. With five weeks to go before midterm elections, Democrats seeking to win control of Congress seized on both revelations to charge that Bush was mishandling the war and Republican lawmakers were failing to hold him accountable.

Canadian school teacher leaves millions to charity

A Canadian teacher who lived a frugal life but gave large, anonymous donations to people in need, has left a C,3-million (,8-million) fortune to an environmental charity. Roberta Langtry (89) kept her wealth a secret until her death last year. The Toronto woman had worked as an elementary school teacher and speech therapist for 55 years, quietly amassing millions.

Zimbabwe brace for trial by fire

Zimbabwe are braced for their latest trial by fire in the heat of the Champions Trophy. Barring a miracle, their trip to India will be brief. The team, still sitting out Test matches, have to play the qualifying tournament with matches against Sri Lanka, West Indies and Bangladesh. Only two sides will make the latter stages.

Brazil’s Lula battles to avoid run-off vote

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva was battling to secure the votes needed to clinch an outright victory in Sunday’s presidential election after public disgust over corrupt politics eroded his support in the final days of campaigning. Failure by Lula to win more than 50% of the vote would mean he faces a run-off against his closest rival on October 29.
