The South African Commercial, Catering and Allied Workers’ Union (Saccawu) has threatened to intensify its strike at Shoprite Checkers. ”We [Saccawu leadership] will meet tomorrow [Saturday] to discuss the way forward,” national secretary Thoko Mchunu said on Friday.

A committee tasked with probing divisions within Cosatu will present its findings to the federation’s top leaders at a specially convened meeting on Friday. The committee was constituted last month by Cosatu’s national office bearers. Meanwhile, it is understood that most Cosatu affiliates have withheld their nominations to re-elect president Willie Madisha to his post.

Former president FW de Klerk’s spokesperson Dave Steward believes he and his wife were ”very lucky” to have emerged relatively unscathed from an armed robbery at their Claremont, Cape Town, home. Steward said on Friday that he and his wife Lanice were attacked as they prepared to reverse out of their garage to visit her elderly parents at 6.15pm on Sunday.

Pope Benedict XVI faced growing Muslim anger on Friday over remarks in which he linked Islam with violence, with the Pakistani Parliament calling on him to retract the statement. In a university lecture in Regensburg, Germany, on Tuesday, the Pope implicitly denounced connections between Islam and violence, particularly with regard to jihad, or ”holy war”.

The annual rate of inflation in Zimbabwe reached a new record high of 1Â 204,6% in August, the central statistics office announced on Friday. The announcement of the new rise came after slight falls in the rate for June and July, which had raised hopes by central bank chief Gideon Gono that a corner had been turned in the fight against the ”inflation dragon”.

The Mail & Guardian will ”vigorously” contest any court order barring publication of an article on MTN chief executive officer Maanda Manyatshe, the newspaper’s editor, Ferial Haffajee, said on Friday. ”The M&G is concerned that dangerous precedent could be set should procedure be exploited to obtain de facto gags, even when the merits have not been argued,” she said.

Four people were confirmed dead on Friday and dozens more were missing after a copper mine collapsed in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). About 50 workers are believed to have been in the mine at the time of the accident, French-language radio station RFI reported, adding that 13 are known to have survived.
