JSE slightly higher as golds lend support

The JSE was slightly firmer in noon trade on Wednesday, propped up by very strong gold stocks. However, with precious metals coming off their highs, dealers said that they would not be surprised to see some profit-taking. By 11.57am, the all-share and all-share industrial indices climbed 0,12% and 0,28% respectively.

A new report by the World Bank and the International Finance Corporation has found that doing business in Africa has become easier thanks to an increase in the pace of reform to encourage business, jobs, and growth and for the first time Africa has made it into the top three among reforming regions.

Uganda rebels want ICC warrants scrapped

Ugandan rebels hidden in the Democratic Republic of Congo will not surrender unless the International Criminal Court (ICC) scraps arrest warrants for them, the deputy commander of the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) said late on Tuesday. Vincent Otti said his fighters would stay in the bush as long as the warrants stayed in place.

Castro says he’s well enough to meet dignitaries

Cuban leader Fidel Castro said he has put the worst of his health crisis behind him and will be able to receive foreign dignitaries in private during a summit of the Nonaligned Movement of developing nations next week. Castro (80) said he lost 18,6kg in a few days after undergoing emergency surgery to stop intestinal bleeding caused by an unexpected health problem on July 26.

No action to be taken against Pakistan

Shoaib Akhtar and the rest of the Pakistan team were exonerated of any wrongdoing after a controversial incident during the third match of their one-day series against England at the Rose Bowl in Southampton on Tuesday. Footage from host broadcaster Sky Television appeared to show the fast bowler flicking at the ball with his left thumb as he returned to his mark.

Police fire on residents blocking highway

Police fired rubber bullets and stun grenades at residents barricading part of the Golden Highway near Orange Farm during a protest over municipal services on Wednesday morning. ”It seems that they [the residents] are upset with the municipality over water and electricity services,” said Superintendent Nthabiseng Mazibuko.
