Child flung from car in horror crash

At least one person died and a child was injured when he was flung from a vehicle in an accident on the N1 in Johannesburg on Saturday night, said Johannesburg emergency services. A car travelling north on the N1 was coming up to the 14th Avenue offramp in Quellerina when it was apparently rear-ended by a BMW.

Russian leader to talk economics with SA, Morocco

Russian President Vladimir Putin, a vocal advocate of a ”multipolar” world, will expand his diplomatic horizons this week with his first visits to South Africa and Morocco, looking to expand economic ties with the two African countries. Putin will be in South Africa on Tuesday and Wednesday, followed by Morocco on Wednesday and Thursday.

Maori stands up for world’s longest place name

A New Zealand Maori says if French winemakers can stop other people from using their place names such as Champagne, Burgundy and Bordeaux, he is claiming intellectual property protection for his local hill, a newspaper reported on Saturday. It’s a big question because the peak is regarded as the longest place name in the world.

Safa welcomes ‘King Carlos’

Seven years ago when the South African Football Association (Safa) first flirted with the idea of acquiring the services of Carlos Alberto Parreira, the renowned Brazilian coach was delayed by custom officials at Johannesburg International airport for somewhere between an hour and 90 minutes. ”No problems this time,” he said on Friday.
