Saving Pluto: The fightback begins

Only a week after Pluto was stripped of its status as a full-fledged planet of the solar system, rebel astronomers have launched a campaign to have it restored in pomp and glory. A petition already signed by more than 300 researchers is attacking the International Astronomical Union decision to expel Pluto from the solar system’s A-list and doom it to the status of ”dwarf planet”.

Hoax e-mail trial date set

The trial of two men implicated in the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) hoax e-mail saga will start in November. Software salesperson Muziwendoda Kunene and the NIA’s manager for electronic surveillance Funokwakhe Madladla stand accused of fraud relating to the hoax e-mails.

What occurred outside the gates of Pollsmoor prison last week was to be expected. A few years ago, another dedicated swindler, as admired and coveted by his accomplices in the upper nestings of the African National Congress, was up in the same place, also displaying his arrogance to his gathered political brethren. He’d also emptied his own well-stocked pantry of lies and evasions.

Gibbs, Boje agree to play in India

South Africa batsman Herschelle Gibbs and bowler Nicky Boje have made themselves available to play in the Champions Trophy tournament in India starting next month. Since 2000, the pair has declined to tour India over fears they may be detained in connection with police investigations into match-fixing.

State: Zuma must show conspiracy

Jacob Zuma will have to provide hard evidence of a political conspiracy against him if he wants his corruption trial dismissed, the state said in heads of argument filed in the Pietermaritzburg High Court. The state argued that ”if the first accused [Zuma] wishes to establish that a political conspiracy exists, he is required to adduce evidence to this effect”.

Govt says Mbeki in good health after tests

South African President Thabo Mbeki underwent medical tests at a hospital this week after suffering a bout of the flu, but he is in good health and expected to return to work shortly, officials said. Mbeki (64) cancelled an appearance in Parliament in Cape Town on Wednesday after complaining of flu-like symptoms.

Intel could slash up to 20 000 jobs worldwide

Intel, the world’s leading computer chip maker which employs 99 000 people worldwide, could soon slash up to 20 000 jobs, a report said on Friday. The layoffs could come as early as next week, when Intel has scheduled an internal announcement, The Wall Street Journal said quoting analysts and former employees of the company.
