Hake has had its chips

Consumers who ease their consciences by eating hake instead of endangered, fish species need to think again. Fishing industry experts warn that unless drastic action is taken hake will soon be the size of a sardine — if you can find it at all. Over-exploitation of hake, mostly by fishing trawlers, has seen catch rates reduced by about 30% in the past few years.

SA soccer: ‘Act now to end failure’

South Africa’s 2010 head, Danny Jordaan, has called for dramatic changes to the way the game is run, if the continent hopes to host its first World Cup successfully. Jordaan was unequivocal about what African teams need to do to perform better in South Africa in 2010: ”Improvements are needed in all areas.”

Behind the shootout

The illegal automatic firearms wielded by criminals in Sunday’s Jeppestown, Johannesburg, shootout have thrown a frightening spotlight on the hundreds of thousands of illegal weapons in circulation in South Africa. Although the South African Police Service has recovered more illegal firearms than those lost or stolen in the past six years, researchers believe 95% of the country’s illegal weapons remain at large.

Scorpions stave off Selebi

The Directorate of Special Operations — the ”Scorpions” — will remain within the National Prosecuting Authority, which will continue to report to the Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development. But political oversight of what the Scorpions’ ”law enforcement responsibilities” will include, moves to the Minister of Safety and Security.
