Malika Labazanova crouched on the floor of her house at number 20, Third Tsimlyansky Lane, Grozny. A young man in camouflage fatigues held the muzzle of an automatic rifle against her head. Both were citizens of the same country, Russia, but he represented the government, and she did not.

As chief engineer of Nicaragua’s 1980s left-wing Sandinista revolution, he became Ronald Reagan’s favourite Central American whipping boy. The United States government conspired with so-called Contra rebels to overthrow him. He was eventually voted out of office in 1990, beaten by a US-backed candidate.

Al-Zarqawi death welcomed

The death of al-Qaeda’s leader in Iraq, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, on Wednesday in Baquba, during a joint United States-Jordanian operation, was hailed as ”great news” on Thursday, but there were differing views on whether it would lead to a break in the violent insurgency that has wracked the Middle East nation.

Guantánamo suicides ‘a PR move’

The Bush administration stared down a new wave of international condemnation of Guantánamo on Sunday, dismissing the suicides by three inmates of the prison camp as a ”good PR move” on their part and an ”act of asymmetrical warfare”. The hard line from an administration official comes at a time of increasing international criticism at the handling of terror suspects at Guantánamo.

Double Bravo for Mexico


Mexico scored twice in three second-half minutes to beat Iran 3-1 on Sunday and give a massive boost to their bid to go past the World Cup quarterfinals for the first time. The world number four and Group D seeds were held at 1-1 for 40 minutes by a battling Iran before Omar Bravo broke the deadlock with his second of the match.

Nadal too strong for Federer

Rafael Nadal of Spain successfully defended his men’s title at the French Open on Sunday, beating world number one Roger Federer of Switzerland 1-6, 6-1, 6-4, 7-6 (7/4) after three hours on the Philippe Chatrier court. The 20-year-old Spaniard extended his record winning streak on clay to 60 matches with the 100th victory of his career.

Powell equals world 100m record

Jamaican Asafa Powell equalled the world 100m record on Sunday, notching a time of 9, 77 seconds to claim victory at the Gateshead Grand Prix. It is the third time the mark has been achieved following Powell’s first clocking in June last year in Athens and American Justin Gatlin’s record-equalling mark set a month ago in Doha.
