Koeberg repairs on schedule

The repairs on Unit One at the Koeberg nuclear power station in the Western Cape were on schedule for completion in the third week of May and refuelling of Unit Two was to commence in the fourth week of May, Eskom said on Friday. This follows huge blackouts related to problems at the power supplier since November.

Crusaders’ win keeps SA teams in contention

The Canterbury Crusaders scored 21 points in the last nine minutes on Friday to beat the ACT Brumbies 33-3 and keep alive the battle for the last semifinals berth in rugby union’s Super 14. Front-rowers Corey Flynn and Campbell Johnstone, and replacement flanker Tanerau Latimer scored late tries to weaken the Brumbies’ hold on fourth place and bring South Africa’s Sharks and Bulls into renewed semifinals contention.

UN finds highly enriched uranium traces in Iran

United Nations nuclear inspectors have found traces of highly enriched uranium at a site where Iran has denied such sensitive atomic work, diplomats told Agence France-Presse on Friday. The diplomats said the particles of weapon-grade uranium came from sample swipes inspectors from the Vienna-based UN nuclear watchdog made last January.

Eastern Cape police in 14-tonne dagga bust

Fourteen tons of dagga were found in the mountains of the Eastern Cape and three people were arrested in an operation running from last Wednesday to Friday, police said. Two unlicensed firearms and 85 rounds of ammunition were also confiscated. Superintendent Mzukisi Fatyela said the dagga is harvested at this time of the year.

Passive potential

Passive funds are big business overseas, with most pension funds using them as core investments and using specialist funds as performance kickers. Passive funds are exactly that. They simply track an index; there is no fund manager actively buying and selling shares and trying to out-perform the market. Hence, passive funds tend to be quite a bit cheaper.

Anti-Leon e-mail rocks Deputies

Just as the African National Congress has set up a commission to investigate hoax e-mails, a new e-mail scandal involving the Jewish Board of Deputies and the ANC has erupted. The board’s national director, Yehuda Kay, has stepped down over an e-mail he sent to the head of the ANC policy centre, Mandla Mabuza, which contained disparaging comments about Democratic Alliance leader Tony Leon.
