Roy Keane hints at retirement

Celtic star Roy Keane has warned he may be forced to retire from the game after his latest injury setback. The former Manchester United skipper limped off with a hamstring injury in Celtic’s 3-0 League Cup victory over Dunfermline on Sunday. Keane thinks the injury could be linked to his troublesome hip, which has plagued him throughout his career.

JSE within 100 points of all-time high

The JSE all-share index on Monday moved within just over 100 points of an all-time high due to stronger world equity markets, firm metals prices and a weaker rand, equity traders said. During the course of Monday morning the JSE all-share index climbed to 20 211,631 points, the highest level for the JSE since February 2.

Supersport snatch win from Golden Arrows

Nine-man Golden Arrows conceded two goals in referee’s optional time at the end of the match to lose 3-2 to Supersport United in a Premier Soccer League match played at the King Zwelithini Stadium in Durban on Sunday afternoon. In other matches, Silver Stars beat Black Leopards 2-0 and Bloemfontein Celtic drew 3-3 to Santos.

Absa predicts downshift in economic growth

Short-term macroeconomic indicators thus far suggest that economic expansion is clearly moderating, according to Absa senior economist Ridle Markus. He says Absa’s expectation that overall economic growth could come in just above 4% year-on-year in 2006 is still intact, with no evidence suggesting substantially higher growth for the year.

Young guns put a smile on Wenger’s face

Arsene Wenger believes his young Arsenal team is maturing at just the right time after watching them brush Charlton aside 3-0 at Highbury. Goals from Robert Pires, Emmanuel Adebayor and Alexander Hleb kept up the pressure for fourth spot in the Premiership which would guarantee them Champions League football when the club moves to their new Emirates stadium next season.

England seeking Woodward to stop rot

England rugby chiefs are hoping to lure World Cup-winning coach Clive Woodward back into the fold following another disappointing Six Nations campaign, it was reported in London on Monday. Woodward heads the Rugby Football Union’s wishlist of replacements for beleaguered coach Andy Robinson, who saw his team suffer their third defeat of the championship against Ireland on Saturday.
