The marketing of a spray that obscures car licence plates from the prying lenses of speed cameras has provoked an intriguing legal debate, the Herald Online reported on Tuesday. A Graaff-Reinet resident claims to have obtained the sole rights to sell and distribute a United States-made spray that blocks speed cameras.

Zim denies torture claims by coup accused

Zimbabwe police have rejected claims of torture made by suspects arrested in connection with an alleged coup plot, and say they are confident of making more arrests soon. Police have also called on former opposition MP Roy Bennett to hand himself over for questioning in relation to their ongoing investigations.

Côte d’Ivoire zoo looks to South Africa for help

Once one of West Africa’s most stunning zoos, Abidjan’s menagerie became a sad victim of the country’s political turmoil but help from South Africa could give it a facelift and its animals a new lease on life. ”Since its creation very few shelters and cages have been built, putting at risk the lives of animals exposed to bad weather,” said zoo director Ayekoue Yapo.

ANC finally announces mayoral candidates

The African National Congress announced its mayoral candidates for six metropolitan councils after a national working committee meeting on Monday. Nomaindia Mfeketo is the candidate for Cape Town, Duma Nkosi for Ekurhuleni, Obed Mlaba for eThekwini, Amos Masondo for Johannesburg, Nondumiso Maphazi for the Nelson Mandela metro and Gwen Ramokgopa for Tshwane.

Artist’s gas chamber angers Jewish groups

He is known for his provocative stunts, which have included tattooing the backs of drug addicts, and spraying a group of stateless Iraqis with foam. But the Spanish artist Santiago Sierra provoked outrage among Jewish groups in Germany on Monday with his latest work — a homemade gas chamber set up in a former synagogue.
