ANC finally announces mayoral candidates

The African National Congress announced its mayoral candidates for six metropolitan councils after a national working committee meeting on Monday. Nomaindia Mfeketo is the candidate for Cape Town, Duma Nkosi for Ekurhuleni, Obed Mlaba for eThekwini, Amos Masondo for Johannesburg, Nondumiso Maphazi for the Nelson Mandela metro and Gwen Ramokgopa for Tshwane.

”The extended NWC considered and endorsed recommendations on the selection of mayors for those metro and district councils in which the ANC is the leading party,” said ANC spokesperson Smuts Ngonyama.

”The mayoral candidates for district councils will be announced at a later stage and candidates for local councils will be announced by the party’s provincial leadership.”

Ngonyama said the ANC was still negotiating with various parties in the Western Cape towards the constitution of those councils in which no party won an overall majority in the March 1 elections.

He said any agreements made needed to be based on a common acceptance by all parties, with special focus on service delivery and meeting the needs of the poor. – Sapa
