Zimbabweans are heading for a dismal new year, with food shortages and an economic crisis expected to worsen while prospects for political change appear dimmer than ever, analysts say. While President Robert Mugabe’s government is forecasting growth of up to 3,5% in 2006, economists and ordinary Zimbabweans are bracing for more hardship.

The JSE was awash with red just before noon on Wednesday in thin trade. Profit-taking following its rally to a record high on Tuesday and weakness in US markets overnight were among factors weighing on the local bourse. By 11.49am, the all share and all share industrial indices shed 1,24% and 1,09% respectively.

The decade-long hunt for the Bosnian Serb military commander Ratko Mladic appeared to be close to a breakthrough on Tuesday after police revealed they had intercepted one of his cellphone calls. Serbian officials said the arrest of General Mladic ”has never been closer”.

Few changes are expected in Egypt’s new government, newspapers reported on Wednesday, as Prime Minister Ahmed Nazif continued consultations to finalise his new Cabinet line-up. According to the Egyptian press, the new Cabinet will be downsized from 34 to 30 portfolios, 23 of which will remain unchanged.

Seedings for the Hopman Cup mixed teams tournament which starts in Perth on Friday have been rendered meaningless by the late injury withdrawal of Australian Open champion Marat Safin. Safin, the world number 12 who was due to pair with Svetlana Kuznetsova to form the top-seeded Russian team for the eight-nation event, was forced to withdraw with tendinitis in his right knee.

Ground troops and a helicopter gunship attacked a group of at least 35 rebel fighters in northern Uganda, killing 20 insurgents, an army spokesperson said on Wednesday. Three other rebels were captured and the rest fled into the bush following the Tuesday evening attack, said Lieutenant Chris Magezi.

All Black great Jonah Lomu scored his first try for Cardiff as they crushed Welsh rivals Newport-Gwent Dragons 41-23 in their Celtic League clash at the Arms Park on Tuesday. As storylines go, it seemed destined to offend. The Ringer, a film by the Farrelly brothers, is about a man who pretends to have learning difficulties so that he can compete in the Special Olympics. With its liberal use of the word ”retarded” and the affectation of disability by an able-bodied man for laughs, it is hardly surprising that studios balked at making it.

Under-fire all-rounder Andrew Symonds gave Australia a decisive edge over South Africa with three wickets on the third day of the second cricket Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Wednesday. Symonds, whose position in the team is under threat after a poor run of scores, hit back with a 16-ball spell of 3-7 with his medium-pacers to have the Proteas trailing by 44 runs in the first innings.
