Suspected Islamist militants tried to attack a major oil facility in Saudi Arabia for the first time on Friday, ramming cars packed with explosives into the gates of a vast processing plant in the country’s east. The attack was foiled when guards opened fire on three cars. Two guards were killed, and two others wounded.

Heavy rains in parts of the East Rand flooded houses and a crèche and saw 32 children rescued by residents on Friday, Ekurhuleni emergency services said. Spokesperson Sugan Moodley said water rushed into the crèche in Tokoza as the draining system was blocked by goods such as plastic bags.

South Africa got the home leg of their series against Australia off to the best possible start with a two-run victory in the Standard Bank Pro20 match at the Wanderers on Friday night, thanks largely to the batting of Graeme Smith and the bowling of Andrew Hall. The match was delayed by two hours because of rain.

Police have denied news reports that Minister of Defence Mosiuoa Lekota was prevented from leaving a Khutsong stadium on Friday. ”There was no such thing whatsoever,” said police spokesperson Superintendent Mary Martins-Engelbrecht of reports that Lekota had been unable to leave the stadium for about 20 minutes.

Three people have been arrested in connection with one of Britain’s biggest robberies, police said on Friday, after they recovered three of the getaway vehicles. A group of thieves made off with up to £50-million from a cash depot in the small market town of Tonbridge, south-east of London.
