Heavy rains in parts of the East Rand flooded houses and a crèche and saw 32 children rescued by residents on Friday, Ekurhuleni emergency services said.
Spokesperson Sugan Moodley said water rushed into the crèche in Tokoza as the draining system was blocked by goods such as plastic bags. The drains were cleared and water was running freely.
He said another two children were rescued from a house in Katlehong after water began to flood their house.
Twelve houses in Khumalo Street, Tokoza, were also affected by the heavy rain. There had also been flooding reports from Palmridge, where water was knee-high in some places.
Moodley said disaster management had been notified to provide blankets and shelter.
Ekurhuleni metro services and a team from road, transport and sewer works were working with emergency services.
Moodley urged people not to cross low-lying bridges or streams as it was still raining in some areas. — Sapa
