A survival merry-go-round

Encroachment by subsistence farmers is threatening the survival of the delicate ecosystem of the coastal peat swamp forests of the St Lucia Wetlands Park in Maputaland, on the border of KwaZulu-Natal and Mozambique. But park authorities are reluctant to take action against the farmers.

Suspicion about terrorist involvement swirled around Hamza and the north London mosque for years.

UN troops open fire on Haiti demonstrators

United Nations peacekeeping troops in Haiti opened fire on demonstrators on Monday near the capital’s international airport, leaving many casualties, according to Haitian police and UN sources. Police said at least one person was killed in the incident, which came after protests grew over the results of last week’s presidential and legislative election.

US digs out from record snowstorm

Road crews scrambled to clear highways for Monday’s commuters, and travellers stranded at airports still waited to get home as the United States Northeast dug out from a record-breaking storm that dumped 60cm or more of snow. The storm dropped 68cm of snow in Central Park — the heaviest since record-keeping was started in 1869.

Protector to probe Phumzile’s plane trip

Public Protector Lawrence Mushwana has decided to probe Deputy President Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka’s holiday trip to the United Arab Emirates last December, despite a public explanation by President Thabo Mbeki. Mlambo-Ngcuka used a South African Air Force plane on her trip, reportedly at a cost of R700 000.
