M&G boss vows to fight Zim authorities

Trevor Ncube, the owner of the Mail & Guardian said he will be bringing an urgent court application on Monday against the relevant Zimbabwe authorities to explain why his passport was confiscated. ”This is intended to break my spirit. It is intended to intimidate me. It is intended to silence me,” Ncube told the Mail & Guardian Online on Friday.

Cops evict thousands in Lagos

Police broke down the gate of a huge housing complex to oust thousands of civil servants and their families on Friday in the latest mass eviction by a government struggling to gain control of its chaotic and crowded cities. Amnesty International has called such evictions in Nigeria a human rights scandal.

Economy buoyant, says Reserve Bank

The South African Reserve Bank on Friday painted a picture of a buoyant South African economy, with citizens better off financially and spending briskly. By the third quarter of the year, the economy had expanded uninterruptedly for 24 successive quarters, says the bank’s quarterly bulletin released in Pretoria.

JSE higher on gold stocks, rand

The JSE was higher at midday on Friday on the back of resources stocks, especially gold shares, as well as the weaker rand, equity brokers said. By 11.51am, the all share index had added 0,24%. Industrials declined 0,31% and financials fell 0,68% while the banks index was 1,25% in the red.

Icasa licenses second national operator

Following the licensing of the second national operator to compete with Telkom, South Africa is finally set for a duopoly of fixed line operators, possibly from 2006, it was announced on Friday. Although the SNO licence issued by the Independent Communications Authority (Icasa) entitled the new player to compete with Telkom on the public switched telecommunications service front, the unbundling of the local loop has been delayed until further notice.

A derby too soon

There are sporting contests so special that the faithful plan months, even years, ahead for the next instalment of their favourite event. The World Cup is one such occasion, cricket’s Ashes series is another. In South Africa, the Soweto Derby features high among these events. At least it does most of the time.

In a league of its own

The African National Congress Youth League has become increasingly isolated in its defiant support for Jacob Zuma, after key party structures dumped him in the aftermath of his rape charge this week. The league said the rape charge alone, without a conviction, was insufficient to warrant a change in its stance.
