A DRC president by May

The transitional government in the Democratic Republic of Congo has wasted no time in moving from the chaotic but successful constitutional referendum last month to full-blown elections by the end of April. Results released recently show that 62% of the 25-million registered voters turned out in the referendum, delivering a resounding 84% vote in favour of the new basic law.

Presidency race ‘for the sake of rugby’

The imminent fight for the presidency of the South African Rugby Union between incumbent president Brian van Rooyen and the man opposing him, KwaZulu-Natal Rugby Union president Oregan Hoskins, will not end in a blood bath, Hoskins said on Monday. Hoskins confirmed last week Friday that he would be contesting SA Rugby’s presidency.

Sudan debate clouds AU summit

African leaders began their annual summit on Monday in disarray, failing to resolve dissension over Sudan’s bid to chair the 53-state body while it is involved in the conflict in western Darfur. The traditional handover to the incoming chairperson was delayed until after a scheduled Monday-afternoon private meeting of leaders.

Subway riders caught pants down

A comedy stunt in which scores of people rode the New York subway in their underwear ended with the arrest of eight panty-proud participants, police said on Monday. A police spokesperson said all had been released after being issued summonses for ”disorderly conduct”.

Buses collide head-on on Brazil highway

Thirty-two people were killed and another 21 were injured when two buses collided head-on in south-western Brazil, police said on Monday. The crash occurred shortly before midnight on Sunday on the Raposo Tavares highway in Regente Feijo, about 840km west of Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo state police Major Claudemir Alcarria said.
