Sudan on Monday offered to withdraw its bid to head the African Union to avoid a split among leaders of the 53-nation body gathered in Khartoum for a summit. The bid from President Omar el-Beshir, who seized power in a 1989 coup, caused unease as the AU is mediating talks to end the bloodshed in Darfur.

United States President George Bush on Monday committed the US to the defence of Israel against threats from Iran, saying he would not allow the world to be ”blackmailed” by an Iranian nuclear weapon. The president’s warning came at a tense time in relations with Iran, after Tehran vowed to restart nuclear research.

It is time for change because the African National Congress government has failed to deliver, African Christian Democratic Party president Kenneth Meshoe said on Monday. The Oilgate matter is still under investigation by the police after the Freedom Front Plus filed charges against Imvume Management last year, the party said on Monday. The National Prosecuting Authority said earlier on Monday it had yet to receive a complaint by the Democratic Alliance about its handling of the Oilgate scandal.

The Nelson Mandela metropolitan council has dropped plans to rebury the remains of President Thabo Mbeki’s late father, Govan, the South African Broadcasting Corporation reported on Tuesday. The municipality earlier announced plans to relocate his remains to the newly built Red Location Museum. However, the family objected.
