A large earthquake measuring 6,4 on the Richter scale hit northern Japan late on Friday. The northern region of Tohoku felt ”a strong jolt” from the quake, which happened at 10.13pm local time, according to the meteorological agency. The quake happened 40km underground, the agency said.

Seven major conservation and wildlife NGOs in South Africa say culling elephants in the Kruger National Park must be considered. A report from the South African National Parks board in July this year proposed culling between 5 000 and 7 000 elephants, but several wildlife groups have opposed the proposal.

Anglican leaders have rejected the appointment of a British reverend to head a diocese in southern Malawi over his support for gay rights, an official said on Friday. Bishops meeting in the capital Lilongwe last week found that reverend Nicholas Henderson was ”unsuitable for confirmation” as bishop of the diocese of Lake Malawi.
