A river of toxic water was coursing towards one of China’s biggest cities on Wednesday night, threatening to contaminate local pipes and forcing millions of residents to prepare frantically for four days without water supplies. The South African Allied and Transport Workers’ Union (Satawu) has called on the government to scrap the R20-billion Gautrain project. Satawu said that instead of spending such an amount on one service, the government should use the money to upgrade the entire rail network.

Listed cellphone company MTN Group on Wednesday reported a 30,8% rise in adjusted headline earnings per share to 222,5 cents for the six month period ended September 30, versus 170,1 cents reported last year. In South Africa, MTN’s customer base grew by 12% to 8,9-million.

The Gauteng and the North West legislatures will hold joint public hearings to consider the Constitution Twelfth Amendment Bill, which deals with South Africa’s cross-boundary municipalities. The Bill, which was recently passed by Parliament, proposes that some councils in Merafong be moved to the North West.

A Norwegian church that included the popular Harry Potter character as a theme in the worship service has raised some questions among Norwegian priests, reports said on Wednesday. The church was packed and many of the congregation had dressed up as characters in the Harry Potter films, newspaper Vart Land said.

A Chilean judge on Wednesday ordered the arrest of former dictator Augusto Pinochet for fraud and other alleged crimes related to millions of dollars in secret overseas bank accounts. The judge ordered that Pinochet, who will be 90 on Friday, remain confined in his home in Santiago’s elegant La Dehesa neighbourhood.

A dozen West African countries have signed a wide-ranging accord to conserve dwindling elephant populations devastated by poaching, conflict and habitat loss, the United Nations said on Wednesday. The 12 nations are now home to fewer than 13Â 000 elephants due to the combined effect of those dangers.

A High Court judge and a businessman have claimed part of a Danish-owned farm south of Harare, the owners said on Wednesday, part of a stepped-up drive to seize white-owned land for black Zimbabweans. The two men arrived on Monday at one of Zimbabwe’s most productive dairy farms accompanied by police and supporters.
