Pumas, Griffons chalk up victories

The Griffons boosted their chances of making the Currie Cup first-division semifinals with a come-from-behind 39-30 win over the Falcons at the Bosman Stadium in Brakpan on Saturday. Also, the Pumas turned around a first-half deficit to beat the Mighty Elephants 31-20 in Port Elizabeth.

Cheetahs fight for victory

The Free State Cheetahs had to fight for the spoils of victory at Wellington on Saturday to stay in the hunt for Currie Cup glory after coming from behind to beat Boland 29-21 in the final quarter of a lively premier-division contest. The Cheetahs looked a shadow of the side that beat the Sharks at King’s Park a fortnight ago.

Cosmologist had an eye on the universe

Hermann Bondi, an astrophysicist whose ideas about cosmology helped formulate the steady-state theory of the universe, has died at age 85. Martin Rees, Britain’s royal astronomer, said Bondi died on September 10 in Cambridge. He had suffered from Parkinson’s disease for years, Rees said.

Sharks claim maximum points

It was mission accomplished for the Natal Sharks at the Absa Stadium in Durban on Saturday when they claimed the maximum five points from Griqualand West in their Absa Currie Cup rugby encounter. The Sharks eventually scored four tries to one in a 29-10 victory after leading 10-3 at the break.

Zim vice-president threatens ‘idle’ farmers

As farming experts in Zimbabwe predict another dismal agricultural season, the country’s vice-president has threatened to take back farms from newly resettled black farmers if they do not fully use the land, a newspaper reported on Saturday. ”If you are not farming properly, this is sabotage at its highest level,” Mujuru said.

Top-seeded Retief Goosen tied his own World Match Play record with an overwhelming 12 and 11 victory over Mark Hensby on Friday and will play United States Open champion Michael Campbell for a place in the final. Campbell drew level with Steve Elkington at the 35th, winning at the 37th with a par to secure his place in the semifinals.
