Ryk Neethling was once again a regular visitor to the podium on the first day of the Fina Swimming World Cup in Durban on Friday. Last year saw the Olympic gold medallist picking up a total of 21 World Cup medals in the eight-leg series and taking the overall title. This year, it seems, will be no different.

The Warriors enjoyed an excellent second day of their Supersport Series cricket match against the Free State Eagles at St George’s Park on Friday, ending play on 153 for one in reply to their opponents’ first-innings 391. The Warriors will be feeling much happier after they had watched the Eagles soar to 329 for five on Thursday.

Bafana Bafana coach Stuart Baxter is confident that his team can beat Senegal in Saturday’s Nelson Mandela Cup match to be played at Port Elizabeth’s Epru Stadium. ”The boys are looking sharp,” Baxter said after his team’s final training session on Friday afternoon.

David Beckham is confident that Wayne Rooney will not allow his combustible temperament to ruin his chances of starring at next summer’s World Cup. Beckham even echoed head coach Sven-Goran Eriksson’s line that to calm Rooney’s temper is to diminish him as a player.

A judge has ruled that a former security guard who was fired for seeing ghosts cannot be denied unemployment benefits. The issue started on September 11, when Wade Gallegos alerted his supervisor at Neighbourhood Patrol of Urbandale that ghosts were haunting a neighbourhood he was guarding.

Mary Pierce defeated Amelie Mauresmo 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 in an all-French match at the WTA Championships on Friday to complete round-robin play with a 3-0 record. By winning, Pierce finished first in the Black group and will play top-ranked Lindsay Davenport in Saturday’s semifinals.

A husband and wife team blew themselves up at one of the Jordanian hotels attacked on Wednesday, al-Qaeda said on Friday. In its third statement posted on the internet, al-Qaeda in Iraq said that it had sent four Iraqis to Jordan to launch suicide attacks, including the wife of one of the bombers.
