A retired Elvis Presley impersonator helped police nab a man suspected of stealing more than 000-worth of memorabilia from the Elvis-a-Rama museum in Las Vegas, authorities said on Wednesday. Duke Adams said he was approached while in line at a pharmacy by a man offering to sell him items once owned by Presley.

The United Nations mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea (Unmee), monitoring the disputed border between the two countries, reported on Thursday that the buffer zone along the border ”remained tense and potentially volatile”. Recently imposed restrictions on Unmee’s activities have also ”considerably increased” during the week.

Jordan said on Thursday it has arrested several suspects over hotel bombings that killed 56 people in the deadliest attacks in the kingdom’s history, claimed by homegrown extremist Abu Musab al-Zarqawi’s militants. The group of al-Zarqawi, who heads al-Qaeda’s Iraq operations, warned of more to come.

Two suicide bombers blew themselves up on Thursday inside a restaurant frequented by Baghdad police, killing at least 33 people and seriously injuring 19, while a car bomb killed seven army recruits in Saddam Hussein’s hometown, police said. Also on Thursday, Iraqi soldiers found the bodies of 27 people near the Iranian border.

Ford’s Ka, launched in South Africa this month, nearly eight years after its arrival elsewhere, rather disappointed me. I’ve watched the company’s latest offerings with interest, and as they’ve improved immensely over the past few years I’ve become a big fan of the Blue Oval.

Minister of Defence Mosiuoa Lekota has been admitted to hospital in Cape Town after a medical emergency, his office confirmed on Thursday. Lekota is thought to have suffered a heart attack, but his spokesperson Sam Mkhwanazi could not confirm this. Lekota is also the national chairperson of the African National Congress.

An escaped ostrich attacked a car and took Cypriot police on a wild-bird chase after escaping from a farm outside the Mediterranean island’s capital of Nicosia, a report said on Wednesday. Police were alerted to the bird’s bid for freedom after it jumped on a woman’s Mercedes.

The Southern African Large Telescope (Salt) at the South African Astronomical Observatory outside Sutherland is powerful enough to discern the detail on a R2 coin at a distance of 5km. Salt will enable the country to remain among the front ranks of those involved in astronomy, President Thabo Mbeki said at its inauguration on Thursday.
