Star SA midfielder hurt during training

South Africa could be without star midfielder Elrio van Heerden in their Nelson Mandela Cup match against Senegal on Saturday. Van Heerden twisted his ankle during the team’s training session at the Westbourne Oval on Wednesday evening. A diagnosis on the extent of the injury will only be available later on Thursday.

Stay away from Zuma court, DA tells premier

KwaZulu-Natal African National Congress Premier Sibusiso Ndebele should refrain from attending a routine court appearance of former deputy president Jacob Zuma on Saturday, says Democratic Alliance KwaZulu-Natal leader Roger Burrows. The party says that leading public demonstrations outside court would undermine judicial independence.

R3,5m per player to win Soccer World Cup

England’s players will pocket a reported £300 000 (R3,5-million) each if they win the World Cup in Germany next summer. The payments are outlined in a bonus package the England players agreed in principle with the Football Association during talks in Manchester that involved senior squad members.

Strike ‘could affect all Durban trains’

About 145 Durban train drivers are expected to go on strike on Thursday afternoon over new rosters, a day after at least 28 coaches were burnt in Gauteng by commuters angered by delays. The drivers’ union will also meet Metrorail CEO Lauriette Modipane to discuss the safety of its drivers in the wave of train torchings.

Civil rights leader, mayor arrested in Zimbabwe

Police in Zimbabwe have arrested a top civil rights leader and the mayor of a major city for allegedly inciting public violence, according to local reports on Thursday. Chitungwiza mayor Misheck Shoko was arrested for ”inciting people to carry out an illegal demonstration in the town”, the state-controlled Herald newspaper said.
