At least 29 people were injured over the weekend when supporters of rival parties clashed in Tanzania’s semi-autonomous island of Zanzibar ahead of October elections, police and witnesses said on Monday. Opposing parties’ supporters fought with metal bars and stones after leaving separate campaign rallies late on Sunday.

The African National Congress in the Western Cape is acting against branches and members involved in a series of violent scuffles at party meetings in Khayelitsha on Sunday. At least eight party members have been suspended and face further disciplinary action after a branch meeting in Khayelitsha turned violent on Sunday.

Zimbabwe has not rejected loan assistance from South Africa, the country’s Herald Online reported on Tuesday. ”As the central bank, we are looking forward to the conclusion of the negotiations that will replenish our coffers accordingly,” it quoted Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe Governor Gideon Gono as saying.

The search for the missing Durban yacht Moquini has been called off, the coordinator of the civilian search, Matthew Thomas, said on Monday evening. The Moquini went missing in the Mauritius-to-Durban yacht race two weeks ago. Three aircraft were involved in a private search for the yacht.
