Safa ‘shoots itself in the foot again’

South African soccer is not in need of another ugly controversy right now, but with the South African Football Association (Safa) appeal board on Sunday postponing for a week Kaizer Chiefs’ appeal to reverse a decision by the Premier Soccer League forcing them to play two homes games in front of empty stadiums, all hell is likely to break loose.

Ajax finish bottom of CAF group

Ajax Cape Town finished bottom of group A in the CAF Championship League when they were beaten 3-0 by Raja Casablanca in a game played at the Athlone Stadium on Sunday night. Raja led 2-0 at the interval after opening the score in the sixth minute when Fofana Abooulkari easily netted.

Raikkonen still in running for world title

Kimi Raikkonen prolonged his battle for the world title when his McLaren teammate Juan Pablo Montoya handed him an easy victory in the Belgian Grand Prix on Sunday. Finn Raikkonen had Montoya to thank after he closed the gap on title race leader Fernando Alonso, but the Colombian suffered a disaster when he crashed out in the closing laps.

Singapore recalls dark days of Japanese surrender

Singapore on Monday marked the 60th anniversary of the formal Japanese surrender in the island during World War II which ended what many regard as the darkest chapter in its history. ”For those who lived through the war, the wounds have taken a long time to heal and the memories will not be forgotten,” said Information Minister Lee Boon Yang.

Australia’s biggest media companies appeared in court on Monday for allegedly conspiring to deprive a rival commercial television network of lucrative sports broadcasting rights. The Seven Network, owned by media mogul Kerry Stokes, is seeking Aus-billion in damages from the country’s biggest media and telecommunications groups over the loss of football rights.
