Heed the UN’s millennium goals, says Mbeki

Hurricane Katrina is a reminder that all humanity needs to achieve the United Nations Millennium Development Goals, President Thabo Mbeki wrote in his weekly newsletter on Friday. He quoted reports saying poorer citizens of New Orleans were more vulnerable to the effects of Katrina than their wealthier compatriots.

Guard arrested after R6m Nelspruit cash heist

A security guard was arrested on Friday for allegedly helping robbers make off with R6-million after a patrol company was robbed in Nelspruit, Mpumalanga police said. Captain Leonard Hlathi said a cash-in-transit vehicle had just delivered the money at D and L Patrol offices on Louis Trichardt Street when the robbers arrived.

US disaster chief loses relief role

Michael Brown, the head of the Bush administration’s disaster relief effort, was relieved on Friday of his role coordinating the response to Hurricane Katrina, after allegations that he had embroidered his professional record and had no emergency management experience. Meanwhile, hopes are rising that Katrina’s human cost might not be as high as some local officials had first feared.

ID’s Sono crosses to new party

The deputy leader of the Independent Democrats, Themba Sono, crossed the floor to a fledgling party just hours after the Cape High Court reversed his expulsion from the ID on Friday. The ID had feared that Sono would defect. ”I have joined the Alliance of Free Democrats,” said Sono in a media statement.

The president of the South African Rugby Union, Brian van Rooyen, survived an eight-hour president’s council meeting on Friday, and remains at the helm of rugby in South Africa. Van Rooyen confirmed that the council agreed unanimously to accept the recommendations of the Brandt-Heunis report on the affairs of rugby.

Typhoid outbreak will clear up, say officials

The number of confirmed typhoid cases in Delmas, Mpumalanga, rose to 100 on Friday, but the situation is gradually being brought under control, health officials said. Up to 700 people are now suffering from diarrhoea, but proper management and precautions should see the outbreak in Delmas brought under control.
