A security guard was arrested on Friday for allegedly helping robbers make off with R6-million after a patrol company was robbed in Nelspruit, Mpumalanga police said.
Captain Leonard Hlathi said a cash-in-transit vehicle had just delivered the money at D and L Patrol offices on Louis Trichardt Street when the robbers arrived.
Common procedure demands that the door of the company’s storeroom be closed immediately after the cash-in-transit vehicle leaves, but that did not happen on Friday.
The robbers, driving in a white Mercedes-Benz stolen in Boksburg on Tuesday, spoke to one of the security guards who let them in, said Hlathi.
Inside, the men held the employees at gunpoint and loaded the R6-million in cash into the car.
As they were about to leave, another security guard, who was not there when the men entered the premises, stopped them to question them. He was shot in the arm and the robbers sped off.
The incident was caught on camera. Two employees, including the security guard, have been taken into police custody for questioning. — Sapa
