Baxter not giving up just yet

When the heat is on, it is not in Stuart Baxter’s nature to get out of the kitchen. The Bafana Bafana coach made this clear on Friday when the local complement of the South African squad returned from their ill-fated trip to Burkina Faso and Germany that torpedoed hopes of qualifying for next year’s World Cup finals.

Leopards hold out for win

The Leopards scored their first win in the premier league of the Currie Cup when they managed a last-minute try to beat the Cavaliers narrowly 50-47 in an exciting match at Olen Park in Potchefstroom on Friday. In other matches, the Falcons beat the Bulldogs 37-36 and the Griffons beat the Mighty Elephants 63-33.

SA discus champion performs well in Monaco

Frantz Kruger, the South African discus record holder, recorded his best performance in three appearances at the IAAF World Athletics final in Monaco on Friday night when he finished in fifth spot with a throw of 63,19m. He came eighth in 2004, and sixth in 2003, when the meeting was held for the first time.

Boost for doping-accused Armstrong

Seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong was given major support in his fight against doping allegations on Friday by the International Cycling Union and a Texas legal triumph. Armstrong had his denials of taking performance-enhancing drugs strongly bolstered in separate findings.

US could leave Iraq in two years, says president

Iraq President Jalal Talabani on Friday warned that an abrupt withdrawal of United States forces from his country ”could lead to the victory of the terrorists in Iraq” and make Iraq more vulnerable to interference from neighbouring countries. But Talabani hinted that if all goes well, the US-led coalition could leave within two years.

Kim Clijsters persevered through five failed match-point chances to come good on her sixth for a 6-2, 6-7 (4-7), 6-3 semifinal upset of top seed Maria Sharapova on Friday at the ,75-million United States Open. Florida keeps eye on Hurricane Ophelia

Ophelia regained hurricane strength on a course expected to swing toward the Atlantic Coast, and forecasters urged residents from northern Florida to the Carolinas to keep close watch on its path over the next few days. The category-one storm had sustained winds of 121kph on Friday night.

Beijing gets its bang back

Next year, residents of Beijing will be able to again enjoy their centuries-old custom of setting off fireworks during the Chinese Lunar New Year, a news report said. Beijing’s municipal legislature on Friday lifted a 12-year ban on fireworks during the Chinese Lunar New Year, also called the Spring Festival, in the Chinese capital.
