Koizumi sends out political ‘assassins’

Junichiro Koizumi, Japan’s maverick Prime Minister, has a rival for the title of the great reformer in the shape of a self-made multimillionaire who describes this Sunday’s general election as a contest between old and new Japan. Takafumi Horie became a household name earlier this year after he launched an unsuccessful bid to gain control of Fujisankei, one of Japan’s most influential media groups.

Birds improve log standing

Moroka Swallows beat a determined Free State Stars 1-0 in their hard-fought Castle Premier Soccer League (PSL) game at the Germiston Stadium on Tuesday afternoon in front of a poor midweek crowd, after leading 1-0 at the break. As a result of this win, Swallows move from 11th to third position on the PSL log.

A joke circulating in soccer circles for some time poses the question: ”When will Jomo Sono, the Jomo Cosmos owner, fire Jomo Sono, the Jomo Cosmos coach?” It could be something more conceivable than many imagine should Sono’s embattled club not emerge from the rut that has plagued them for the past year.

‘Competitive’ Armstrong considers comeback

Retired life is nice, but Lance Armstrong says he’s thinking about making a comeback. Recently engaged to rocker girlfriend Sheryl Crow, Armstrong issued a statement on Tuesday confirming that he’s contemplating a return to competitive cycling. ”The recent smear campaign out of France has awoken my competitive side,” he said.

Federer, Hewitt cling on in US Open

Roger Federer dropped his first set in the United States Open before putting away Nicolas Kiefer of Germany 6-4, 6-7 (3), 6-3, 6-4 on Tuesday to earn a spot in the quarterfinals. Lleyton Hewitt won 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 over number 15 Dominik Hrbaty, who drew more attention for his pink peekaboo shirt than his play.
