Crunch time for Sono

A joke circulating in soccer circles for some time poses the question: ”When will Jomo Sono, the Jomo Cosmos owner, fire Jomo Sono, the Jomo Cosmos coach?”

It could be something more conceivable than many imagine should Sono’s embattled club not emerge from the rut that has plagued them for the past year — and more — in Wednesday night’s Premier Soccer League (PSL) clash against Silver Stars at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane.

While these might be early days in the season to speculate on relegation issues and so forth, Cosmos’ position at the bottom of the log already has an ominous appearance — and will become infinitely more stark if they are beaten by a team only marginally better-placed in 16th position in the 18-team league.

It is for Cosmos a continuation of the relegation plight that plagued them endlessly last season — but one that contains more than a grain of mystery in view of the strong complement of players at Sono’s disposal.

In other PSL games on Wednesday night, Santos and Ajax Cape Town will be vying for coastal supremacy in their derby clash at the Athlone Stadium, and Bloemfontein Celtic will try to consolidate their growing reputation against Golden Arrows in Bloemfontein.

And if any of these four clubs are to mount a serious challenge for the PSL championship, they will need to cement three points at this pivotal juncture of the league programme in order to stay within reach of pace-setters Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns. — Sapa
