Who are the real Sundowns?

They may have proved their worth as Telkom Charity Cup champions for a second successive year by winning Saturday’s final in front of a 70 000 crowd at the FNB Stadium while fielding basically different teams for the games against Black Leopards and Bloemfontein Celtic. Now the intriguing question is: Who are the real Sundowns?

Arsenal victorious in Amsterdam

Arsenal won the preseason Amsterdam Tournament after substitute Fredrik Ljungberg scored two second-half goals to help beat FC Porto 2-1 on Sunday. Boca Juniors beat Ajax 1-0, with the goal coming from Jose Calvo. The win gave Arsenal nine points, followed by Porto with six.

Clijsters cruises past Venus

Fourth-seeded Kim Clijsters easily defeated Venus Williams 7-5, 6-2 in Sunday’s final for her third Bank of the West Classic title. Clijsters claimed her fourth title of the year and third on hard courts, having won at Indian Wells and Miami in the spring. Williams slipped to 6-3 all-time against Clijsters.

Speculation rife about Owen transfer

England striker Michael Owen, who has dropped further down Real Madrid’s hierarchy after recent signings, will be allowed to leave the Spanish first-division club, a Real source told the Sunday Times. Madrid’s recent purchases of Santos striker Robinho and Sevilla’s Julio Baptista has meant Owen is in fifth spot for a starting place.

SA teen surfer wins US event

South African national junior team member Nikita Robb (16), of East London, won the  000 Target Women’s Junior Pro at Huntington Beach on Saturday. Robb was awarded a 9,83 score on one of her two counting waves in the final, the highest points recorded in any division of the event.

Agassi rebounds to take 60th title

Andre Agassi returned to match fitness in emphatic fashion on Sunday as the veteran stormed past Gilles Muller 6-4, 7-5 to register his 60th career title at the  000 ATP Mercedes-Benz Cup. ”It feels amazing; this is why you work so hard. I’m taking it all in and feeling good,” Agassi said.

SA church aid to be trucked to Zimbabwe

A convoy of trucks carrying aid relief of 4 500 blankets and 37 tonnes of maize, beans and oil is to leave Johannesburg for Zimbabwe on Monday. The office of Anglican Archbishop Njongonkulu Ndungane said on Monday the blankets were donated by the Anglican church. Other churches collected the rest of the goods.
