Massive fuel hike in Zimbabwe

Zimbabwean authorities on Tuesday more than doubled the price of fuel in a bid to ease critical shortages, state television reported. The price of petrol was hiked from 3 600 Zimbabwe dollars (R2,60) per litre to Z 000 (R6, 70) per litre. The cost of a litre of diesel was increased from Z 650 (R2,40) to Z 600 (R6,40).

Zuma’s case postponed to October

The case against former deputy president Jacob Zuma was postponed to October 11 by the Durban Magistrate’s court on Wednesday. He was granted bail of R1 000. Zuma will not have to hand in his passport but will have to inform the prosecution every time he leaves the country.

Joburg municipality writes-off R510m in arrears

The city of Johannesburg has written off R510-million in account holder arrears out of a total R1,5-billion as part of its subsidy scheme, the municipality said on Tuesday. A total of 37 000 account holders, out of about 100 000 who qualify for the scheme, have already registered, municipal finance department spokesperson Mandy Woods said in a statement.

Bush evokes 9/11 to bolster Iraq war

United States President George Bush on Tuesday night rallied Americans to the cause of the Iraq war, urging them not to forget the lessons of September 11 and arguing the fight was vital to future US security. Again and again in his primetime speech, the president attempted to bind the Iraq counter-insurgency to the broader ”war on terror”.

Tobacco giants face $14-billion claim

The United States government on Tuesday said it was seeking -billion in penalties against tobacco companies in a racketeering case that accused the industry of conspiring to hide the risks of smoking. The sum includes -billion to fund an anti-smoking education campaign in addition to the -billion quit smoking programme outlined by government prosecutors.

Better than delusions

They are calling it the war of the colours. On one side, the Jewish settlers facing eviction from Gaza, hoping to stage Israel’s own orange revolution — urging their fellow citizens to wear or wave orange in protest at the upcoming withdrawal. On the other, the settlers’ opponents who, have failed to agree on a colour scheme.

People have this idea that there is such a thing as normal and that everyone more or less is normal. However the closer you look, the more you see that this is merely a pipe dream put out by the authorities who’d rather we didn’t realise that we’re all weirdos, mad, insane, anarchists — and very happy with it.
