Killed in name of honour

Faten Habash’s father wept as he assured his daughter there would be no more beatings, no more threats to her life and that she was free to marry the man she loved, even if he was a Muslim. All he asked was that Faten return home. But the next weekend Faten, was bludgeoned to death with an iron bar. Her father was arrested for the murder.

Women may fool their sexual partners by faking orgasm, but their brains cannot lie. Reaching a proper sexual climax is, for women at least, a mind-blowing event. Large parts of their brains that deal with emotion and fear appear to shut down so that they can enjoy the thrill.

Dissent in the debt ranks

Africa goes into the big match at Gleneagles next month 1 to 0 up but with some dissention in the ranks. To win the final at the gathering of the world’s richest countries, it needs a 3 to 0 result. The -billion debt forgiveness announced in London by finance ministers of the seven most industrialised countries is the first goal of the 18 developing countries that qualify as highly indebted poor countries.

Over 17 000 prisoners released

Prisons have released 17 356 sentenced offenders since the special remission of sentence for offenders started on June 13, the government announced in Pretoria on Wednesday. The special amnesty was granted by President Thabo Mbeki in an effort to reduce the pressure caused by overcrowding in prisons.

This agricultural movement has now spread around the world. Biodynamic food is beginning to penetrate the mainstream marketplace, albeit slowly, and gaining a reputation as it does so for exceptional quality.

Water price set to rise

The price of water will increase by about 16 cents (to around R3,15 per kilolitre) from July 1, Rand Water said on Wednesday. Rand Water supplies bulk amounts of water to municipalities across South Africa, and therefore the increase to consumers will vary, said Rand Water chief executive Simo Lushaba.
