Another swimming victory for Roland

Roland Schoeman of South Africa won the 50m freestyle on Wednesday at a short-course swimming World Cup meet, one day after setting a world record in the 100m individual medley. Schoeman won the 50 freestyle in 21,53 seconds at Eriksdalsbadet’s fast pool, beating Jason Lezak of the United States by 0,07 seconds.

Chiefs lucky to get a point

Kaizer Chiefs were lucky to get a point after their one-all draw with Dynamos in their otherwise ding-dong Castle Premiership match at FNB Stadium on Wednesday night. Amakhosi were a shadow of the mean club who whipped Bloemfontein Celtic 4-1 in a league match at the same venue over the weekend.

Sundowns fight back for victory

Mamelodi Sundowns launched a powerful second-half comeback to beat Santos 2-1 in a Castle Premier League clash at Loftus Stadium on Wednesday night. Santos opened the scoring through Reuben Cloete, who took advantage of Sundowns’ sloppy defending as early as the second minute.

Exeter make United sweat

Non-league minnows Exeter City bowed out of the FA Cup with their heads held high after making Manchester United sweat right to the end of their third-round replay on Wednesday night. It was not until Wayne Rooney’s 87th-minute strike completed a 2-0 win that the world’s richest club finally guaranteed their place in the fourth round.

26 killed in Baghdad suicide bombings

A series of suicide car bomb attacks rocked Baghdad on Wednesday killing up to 26 people. At least four separate bombs went off within 90 minutes of each other in a coordinated strike. The United States military said 26 people were killed, although Iraqi officials put the toll lower at around 12 dead.

Rasool lays plans after Cape blaze

Shortcomings in the enforcement and the monitoring of fire control mechanisms, such as firebreaks in informal settlements, were acknowledged by the Western Cape government on Wednesday. This followed a devastating fire at Cape Town’s Joe Slovo settlement on Saturday which left 12 000 people homeless and caused the death of an infant.
