EU Constitution gets the nod

The European Parliament gave its overwhelming endorsement to the European Union’s first-ever Constitution on Wednesday and urged EU governments to follow suit. "This is an important moment in the history of the Parliament, and it is an important moment in Europe’s ratification of Europe’s Constitution," said Luxembourg Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker.

The owner of Sehnsucht, or Nostalgia, in the German capital’s Tiergarten quarter is Katja Eichbaum, and she too has come a long way back from the brink.

‘Irresponsible’ Egyptian TV dramas in trouble

Egyptian television dramas will soon be subject to review by a panel of religious censors, sparking outcry by authors who say the move is a threat to their creative freedom and livelihoods. Information Minister Mamduh al-Beltagi said only shows that are "responsible" and "respect the values and traditions of Egyptian society" will be allowed on air.

Western Cape drought: 6 000 families affected

The human aspect of drought would be described to President Thabo Mbeki and Western Cape premier Ebrahim Rasool in a bid to have affected parts of the province re-declared as disaster areas. This was according to Dr Pieter van Rooyen, chairperson of an inter-departmental task team set up to report into the social aspects of the drought.

Jobs unveils no-frills Mac and new iPod

Apple Computer chief executive Steve Jobs unveiled a very small computer on Tuesday and a flash memory-based music player called the iPod Shuffle. The new products seek to make inroads against the traditionally more affordable PC market and against lower-cost competitors to Apple’s wildly popular iPod.
