The Premier Soccer League clash between Kaizer Chiefs and Supersport United at Soccer City on Wednesday night was hailed to be the thriller of the season. Instead, the Chiefs faithful sat through a 0-0 draw and they must have felt well let down afterwards, wondering why they didn’t stay home to watch European Champions League action on the telly.

The Eagles were crowned Standard Bank Cup champions at Goodyear Park in Bloemfontein on Wednesday evening after a third-wicket partnership of 151 between Boeta Dippenaar and Davey Jacobs ensured that they defeated the Titans by seven wickets. Dippenaar, named man of the match, guided the Eagles to a target of 259 with an excellent 92.

The controversial sending-off of Chelsea striker Didier Drogba saw Barcelona come back from 1-0 down to beat the English Premiership leaders 2-1 in their Champions League first knockout round first-leg clash on Wednesday. Chelsea’s defeat was somewhat softened by the fact they have an away goal, whereas Manchester United lost 1-0 to AC Milan at Old Trafford.

International Olympic Committee (IOC) members received finance and security assurances for New York’s 2012 Olympic bid on Wednesday, as well as a videotaped pledge of support from United States President George Bush. A 13-person IOC evaluation committee heard Bush vow full backing for the ,6-billion bid in the third day of private meetings.

Leading golfers, including world number three Ernie Els and sixth-ranked Sergio Garcia, have signed up for the ,3-million Johnnie Walker Classic in Beijing. The event, which counts towards the European, Asian and Australasian tours, will be held at the Jack Nicklaus-designed Pine Valley Golf Resort and Country Club from April 21 to 24.

The president of Athletics South Africa (ASA), Leonard Chuene, on Thursday announced that the outgoing CEO, Banele Sindani, will be replaced by Linda Ferns, in her new capacity as general manager of ASA. Chuene said the ASA board had unanimously agreed that Ferns will be best suited to fill the role of general manager.

The Chamber of Mines has described this year’s Budget as a success in ”balancing the need for a higher social wage with a need to promote a supply-side investment environment for business”.
