The Eagles were crowned Standard Bank Cup champions at Goodyear Park in Bloemfontein on Wednesday evening after a third-wicket partnership of 151 between Boeta Dippenaar and Davey Jacobs ensured that they defeated the Titans by seven wickets.
Dippenaar, named man of the match, guided the Eagles to a target of 259 with an excellent 92, while Davey Jacobs finished the game off with a six in the 44th over.
Jacques Rudolph and AB de Villiers set the platform for a big total with an opening stand of 134 runs as the Titans posted 258 for five, the highest score at Goodyear Park this season.
Rudolph, bowled by a no-ball with the second ball of the innings, was also given two further chances as he scored 60 before Johannes van der Wath, taking his 20th wicket of the season, had him caught at the wicket.
De Villiers, also given a chance, had scored 89 when he failed to clear mid-on in trying to increase the tempo. Zander de Bruyn added 25 before making way for Justin Kemp, who was run out for 18.
The Eagles’ fielding was below standard as two more catches went to ground.
Daryll Cullinan was dropped as he raced to 32, run out on the final ball of the innings, and Albie Morkel dropped on his way to a quick 22.
Morne van Wyk and Loots Bosman put on 49 before Bosman was caught behind on 16.
The loss of Van Wyk, caught at mid-on for 44, slowed the momentum down as Boeta Dippenaar, dropped early in his innings, and Davey Jacobs first consolidated the innings.
The acceleration started in the 26th over with the Eagles needing 144 in 20 overs. The timing was perfect with Dippenaar run out 29 runs short of the target, while Jacobs finished on 73 and Boje on 19. — Sapa
