After festooning his house with 17Â 000 Christmas lights, Alex Komarnitsky wanted more than just passers-by to enjoy the spectacle. He got his holiday wish.
His interactive website, which allows internet users to turn the lights on and off with the click of a mouse, is attracting thousands. "It’s out of control," Komarnitsky said.

AngloGold Ashanti, a Ghanaian-South African gold mining company, said on Tuesday it would explore for gold in the southeast Asian country of Laos following an exploration alliance with Oxiana Limited of Laos. A statement said the agreement with Oxiana follows AngloGold Ashanti’s investment in Trans-Serbian Gold in Russia and a strategic alliance in the Philippines with Red 5 Limited.

Thousands of villagers in northwest China’s Gansu province were combing the hills in search of an unidentified flying object believed to be large meteorite, state media said on Wednesday. The object is thought to have hit the rural suburbs, about 60km from downtown Lanzhou on Saturday night.

Four British tourists died on the West Coast on Tuesday night when their rental car and a truck collided on the R27 route at Saldanha. The deceased’s family are expected to arrive in South Africa on Wednesday to identify their bodies, said police spokesperson Inspector Elliot Sinyangana.

The JSE Securities Exchange (JSE) enjoyed a firmer opening on Wednesday, helped by futures activity ahead of the afternoon’s close-out and a strong performance on Wall Street overnight. Gains were seen almost across the board and advancers outnumbered decliners on the all-share index by almost four to one.

A number of measures have been put in place to increase security on Table Mountain — where tourists have recently been mugged, stabbed and raped, the city of Cape Town and the Table Mountain National Park said on Tuesday. ”We are putting in place a range of immediate measures to address security threats that exist, and we are asking residents and visitors to work with us to address the problem,” the city’s executive mayor Nomaindia Mfeketo said.
