BEE dawns in agribusiness

Black economic empowerment (BEE) is about encouraging black businesses and business people. So BEE deals need not be ”broad-based” in the sense of involving every African National Congress member and his uncle. By the same token, agricultural land ownership reform should be seen as part of BEE, and not just changing racial ownership patterns, writes Reg Rumney.

Court deals blow to racing king

Bernie Ecclestone’s future as formula-one grand prix supremo was cast into doubt on Monday when London’s High Court dealt a blow to his boardroom power base. But the ruling may have helped prevent a breakaway movement launched by four formula-one teams from carrying out its threat to create a rival series to formula one.

Singh captures PGA player of the year title

Fiji’s Vijay Singh, the first golfer to win more than -million in one season, was named the PGA Tour’s player of the year for the first time in New York on Monday. Singh ended the five-year reign of Tiger Woods as world number one in September, defeating Woods in a man-to-man duel for the Deutsche Bank Championship title to confirm his supremacy.

‘Please don’t stop donating blood’

The South African National Blood Service appealed for blood on Monday ahead of the holiday season — but at the same time, another meeting was taking place with the Department of Health to clarify issues surrounding its racial profiling policies. The department has confirmed that race is one of the criteria the service uses to establish blood safety.

Seven bombs in seven cities

Seven bombs went off in as many Spanish cities on Monday within the space of half an hour, slightly injuring five people, after anonymous callers claiming to speak for the underground Basque separatist group ETA told a Basque newspaper to expect the explosions.
