Eleven children seriously hurt in bus accident

Eleven children were seriously injured when a bus on its way to a local school overturned between Wartburg and Dalton on Friday, KwaZulu-Natal police said.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Sumay van Zyl said it appears the bus driver lost control of the bus.

About 32 children were slightly injured and were taken to hospital for treatment. Approximately 10 children were unharmed.

Van Zyl said the injured children were taken to various hospitals in Pietermaritzburg. Dalton and Wartburg are north-east of Pietermaritzburg.

The cause of the accident is unknown and police are investigating.

KwaZulu-Natal education minister Ina Cronje expressed shock at the news.

”We will be working very closely with the transport department to investigate the accident,” Cronje said.

Action will be taken against anyone found to have been negligent, she added. — Sapa
