SA’s deaf swimmers haul in the medals

Swimming champion Terence Parkin and the Gauteng-based Lessing brothers, Nick and Greg, increased the momentum of Team South Africa’s medal challenge at the swimming arena at the 20th Deaflympics in Melbourne, Australia, on Sunday. By the end of the fourth day’s action, Team SA’s medal tally stood at a total of six (five gold, one silver).

Bangladesh take lead in cricket Test

Elton Chigumbura took five wickets for 54 runs and captain Habibul Bashar hit a half-century on Sunday to give Bangladesh a commanding 380-run lead over Zimbabwe on the fourth day of the first cricket Test. This is Zimbabwe’s first Test match since losing International Cricket Council Test status.

Swallows return in style

Moroka Swallows made a triumphant return to the Rand Stadium on Sunday when they beat Kaizer Chiefs 1-0 in a Castle Premier Soccer League match on Sunday afternoon. The lone goal from substitute Dennis Lota came in the dying moments of the game, just when the match looked likely to end in a goalless draw.

Hard-fought win for Sundowns

Supersport United lifted their league season when they scored a hard-fought 2-1 win over neighbours Mamelodi Sundowns in their Pretoria Castle Premiership derby played at the HM Pitje Stadium on Sunday. Sundowns dominated the first half but failed to convert and capitalise on the chances they created.

Titans try hard, but match ends in draw

The Titans chased 238 off 65 overs for victory at Supersport Park on Sunday after Mark Boucher had declared the Eagles innings closed on 384 for seven, but the match petered out to a draw. Goolam Bodi and Zander de Bruyn took the game by the scruff of the neck to put on 120 for the third wicket.

Dreary draw for Eagles, Dolphins

The Eagles and the Dolphins played to a dreary draw at Goodyear Park in Bloemfontein on Sunday after the Dolphins’ first innings came to a close one hour after the lunch break on the last day. Young Dolphins batsman Ashraf Mall attained his maiden first-class 100 as well as his first double 100.

Ponting wins toss in tsunami match

World XI skipper Ricky Ponting won the toss on Monday and decided to bat in the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) tsunami-appeal fund-raising match against an Asian XI. Ponting is one of five Australians in the World XI, which also includes West Indies batsman Brian Lara and New Zealanders Stephen Fleming, Chris Cairns and Daniel Vettori.

World XI victorious in tsunami-relief match

Cricket provided the spectacle and the fund-raising vehicle as Ricky Ponting’s World XI beat an Asian XI by 112 runs on Monday in a benefit match that generated Aus,6-million (R66,3-million) for the tsunami relief fund. Ponting stroked 115, New Zealand all-rounder Chris Cairns smashed 69 off 47 balls and West Indian Brian Lara hit 52.
