The Titans chased 238 off 65 overs for victory at Supersport Park on Sunday after Mark Boucher had declared the Eagles innings closed on 384 for seven, but the match petered out to a draw.
Goolam Bodi and Zander de Bruyn took the game by the scruff of the neck to put on 120 for the third wicket, with De Bruyn striking a 71-ball 86 with 12 fours and three sixes, prior to being caught by Arno Jacobs off Nantie Hayward.
A cameo innings of 33 off 22 balls from Albie Morkel edged the Titans even closer to their target.
But sadly, for the home side who needed victory to surge to the top of the log, the umpires decided that the ambient light was insufficient for play to continue, with the home side needing 55 runs to win off 20 overs.
When the players traipsed off the park, Bodi had faced 119 balls and struck seven fours and a six. With him at the wicket was Kruger van Wyk on six.
The Titans remain second in the log behind the Dolphins with 75,86 points.
Earlier, De Bruyn and Arno Jacobs had contributed 246 (33 fours, one six), for the third wicket, and in an effort to dislodge the pair Martin van Jaarsveld — who was captaining the Titans in the absence of Daryll Cullinan — used eight bowlers.
Eventually, Paul Harris — who had toiled long and hard (31 overs) for scant results — did the job by rearranging De Bruyn’s stumps.
The opener added 33 runs to his overnight 109, his second century of the season, from 238 balls with 20 boundaries before misjudging the spinner’s delivery.
As so often happens in big partnerships where the batsmen feed off each other, Jacobs followed 11 balls later, but not before he had struck his seventh first-class century, and his third of the Supersport series.
The stylish middle-order batsman reached his milestone with a four struck through the covers off Andre Nel, but the quickie then exacted his revenge, with the next delivery uprooting the sticks.
Jacobs had struck 20 fours and a huge six in a 186-ball 101.
Mark Boucher did little to convince the selectors that he is the right man to fill the wicketkeeper/batsman role, requiring 40 minutes and 24 deliveries, prior to Nel trapping him in front, to become the fast-bowler’s fourth victim of the innings.
With the batsmen throwing the willow at everything that moved in order to set a competitive total, Burton de Wett tried to hoick Nel out of the park, only to top-edge the delivery to the substitute running in from long-off.
With his dismissal came the declaration and Nel’s 10th first-class ”Fifer”, and a match haul of 9/135.
Undefeated Robin Peterson struck eight fours and a six deposited over mid-wicket, off 41 balls, and together with De Wett contributed 85 for the seventh wicket. — Sapa
