Wits win through to quarterfinal

Wits University passed their first test in the Coca-Cola Cup with flying colours on Wednesday night when they mauled Manning Rangers 3-0. Wits, the hosts, led 1-0 at interval. The visitors from Durban took home R150 000 for their participation. It was an all-Zimbabwean affair for the Students as all three goals were scored by players from South Africa’s northern neighbour.

From wood to coal to curb Niger’s deforestation

The competition between energy and environmental needs in Niger has taken centre stage of late, with authorities seeking to promote the use of coal in a bid to halt deforestation in the North African country. ”If we don’t take steps now, we will be short three million tons (three billion kilograms) of firewood in 2010, or 2,5 times the present sustainable supply, and our forests will disappear.”

Mandela match to go ahead, sponsor or not

This bold statement came from the CEO of the South African Football Association, Albert Mokoena, at the official launch of the high-profile event. Euro ghosts return to haunt Arsenal’s Lehmann

Jens Lehmann’s Champions League curse returned to haunt Arsenal on Wednesday as two mistakes by the big goalkeeper forced the Gunners to settle for a 2-2 draw against Panathinaikos. Airline charges fees for helping the handicapped

A group of handicapped South Africans have threatened legal action against a local airline for charging extra fees to passengers who need assistance boarding. Nationwide Airlines will have to answer to complaints of discrimination before the Equality Court, a Cape Town-based tribunal, said Vincent Gore, a member of the Independent Democrats opposition party.

Defending champion Ferrero ousted in Spain

Defending champion Juan Carlos Ferrero was eliminated by Luis Horna of Peru 6-3, 6-1 in the second round of the €2,4-million Madrid Masters on Wednesday. Ferrero committed 37 unforced errors in his worst result since April, when he could win only three games against Spanish countryman Fernando Verdasco in the Valencia semifinals.
