Wits win through to quarterfinal

Wits University passed their first test in the Coca-Cola Cup with flying colours on Wednesday night when they mauled Manning Rangers 3-0. Wits, the hosts, led 1-0 at interval. The visitors from Durban took home R150 000 for their participation.

It was an all-Zimbabwean affair for the Students as all three goals were scored by players from South Africa’s northern neighbour.

Charles Yohane scored a brace. His first goal came in the 80th minute and he rattled the net again three minutes later.

But the man who really destabilised Rangers was Alois Bunjira after he blasted home a beauty from an awkward angle in the 20th minute.

His splendid display earned him the Flair Moment of the Match award which gave the dreadlocked Zimbabwean a cash bonus of R5 000 and the famous number 10 jersey.

Wits’ three goals meant R30 000 in the bag for the five orphanages earmarked by the sponsors, who have also donated R100 000 to an anti HIV/Aids programme.

Both clubs, who played a fast-flowing game, especially in the first stanza, finished their clash with 10 players.

Wits’ Sipho Mngomezulu was the first player to be sent for an early shower in the 72nd minute. He deliberately kicked Teboho Tsui and referee Peter Mabuza swiftly pulled out the red card.

Francois Mpessa, who had been cautioned for an infringement in the 26th minute, was booked for the second time after he tripping Gareth Devine inside the penalty box in the 79th minute. – Sapa
